One of the mistakes some homeowners make is to try and use a Tiffany style lampshade on a pendant fixture. Don't get me wrong; Tiffany definitely has its place. Floor lamps and table lamps often add a dramatic flair when used with a Tiffany lampshade. The pendant, on the other hand, is designed to be slim and sleek and putting a Tiffany fixture on the end of one defeats the purpose, in my opinion, because you are really mismatching functional styles. I suggest that you stay with the more traditional style of pendant lighting such as something called the Colonial. This impressive fixture features a shade that gives one the appearance of a lantern with a candle inside.
The key to good lighting in your home is choosing what fits your decor and will work with any changes you might make in the future. While it's important to remember that you don't have to keep the same interior fixtures forever, you'll likely have them for the next ten years or so if you stay in the same home, so it might be worth it to take a little extra time making your choices.
Both traditional central ceiling fixtures and recessed (or 'down') lights will provide good levels of ambient light without breaking the bank. Wall lights with shades or covers, when used in conjunction with central ceiling lights or down lights, can help to add variety while contributing to a mellow atmosphere.
What makes contemporary lighting different from traditional? The most obvious difference is the clean lines and sleek shape that many of these contemporary light fixtures have. Some are simple white and chrome. Some are colorful and little bit funky. You can embrace both classical and contemporary with certain lighting designs. It is important to know what your taste is before you make any decisions however. Otherwise, you might find yourself replacing your lighting within a couple of years. Moreover, who wants to spend money twice when you shouldn't?
One consideration when considering contemporary lighting is what style your home is. If you live in an old Victorian, including a contemporary sleek steel fixture in foyer might not be the best idea. If your home is an old Arts and Crafts bungalow, that beautiful pendant shade with Murano glass might not be the best idea either. However, if your home is anything found from the mid-century ranch to just about any design built last decade, contemporary lighting fixtures are good ways to go in your home. You can get great style along with great lighting with these fixtures. Filling functional need with style is always a good idea.
